Opera Colorado is looking for:
We will be hiring one soprano, one mezzo-soprano, one tenor, one baritone and one bass.
Who are the Opera Colorado Young Artists?
The Young Artists are a group of professional opera performers who participate in a 7-month residency program with Opera Colorado. During their residency, they receive ongoing training and gain valuable experience as they bring opera directly to schools and other community venues throughout Colorado and surrounding states as well as participation in opera-related fundraisers and events.
What shows will the Young Artists be doing?
The 2010-2011 touring shows will include Arias & Ensembles performances, Gounod's
Romeo et Juliette and Humperdinck's
Hansel and Gretel. The lead roles for a special student matinee performance of Rossini's
Cinderella, sung in Italian with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, will also be performed by the 2010-2011 Young Artists. The fully-produced matinee will take place at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.
What other opportunities will the Young Artists have?
Artists will have the opportunity to participate in mainstage productions in the chorus and may be considered for certain roles for Opera Colorado’s 10-11 season: Puccini's
La Bohème, Dvorák's
Rusalka, and Rossini's
Cinderella. The Young Artists will receive training and coaching from Opera Colorado staff and guest artists and will each have the opportunity to showcase their talents in special Art Song recitals. Young Artists will also have the opportunity to participate in Master Classes during their residency, conducted by various guest artists. Each Young Artist will also be assigned various production duties, such as props, load-in/out, costume maintenance, road management, etc.
Who is eligible?
Applicants should have considerable experience performing leading roles in opera on the graduate and/or young artist level. Young Artists are contracted for a seven-month residency Sept. 17-Nov. 20; Jan. 3-May 31). Singers will receive a $1700 monthly stipend. Young Artists are responsible for their own transportation and housing while in Denver.
When and where will auditions be held?
Auditions will be held in May 2010 in NYC (May 7, 8) and Denver (May 14).
What are the audition requirements for chosen applicants?
-Prepare 5 selections of contrasting styles and languages.
Successful applicants will keep the 2010-2011 productions in mind when choosing selections.
-Applicants are also required to prepare a 15 second introduction for each aria, presented as if speaking to an audience of elementary school children.
-Stage presence, characterization, movement, and the candidate’s ability to interact with students will be taken into consideration equally with vocal and stylistic qualities. Please keep this in mind when choosing your selections.
