The Story
A young girl yearns for true love while under the thumb of her cruel stepfather and vain stepsisters. But when Cinderella offers kindness to a stranger, her fate is forever altered as she is whisked away to the ball and becomes the woman who captures the prince’s heart. Rossini’s version of the classic folk tale is a delight, and in the end, Cinderella’s transformation is brought about not by supernatural powers, but through the magic of music.
The Cast and Crew
Mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack (San Francisco Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis), a native of Buenos Aires, comes to Denver to sing the title role in
Cinderella. Ms. Mack was an Adler Fellow at San Francisco Opera for two years. She is joined by tenor Michele Angelini (Los Angeles Opera, Fort Worth Opera), who will portray her love interest, Don Ramiro.
The Music
“Questo è un nodo avvilupato"
"Miei rampolli femminini"
"Come un'ape ne' giorni d'aprile"
"Si, ritrovarla io giuro"
"Nacqui all'affano…Non piu mesta"
Did You Know?
Rossini composed the opera in only three weeks, partially because he reused several musical pieces from other operas he had written.
In the opera, Cinderella’s name is actually Angelina.
The alternate name for
Cinderella is
La bontà in trionfo, or
Goodness Triumphant.
This opera has several differences to the original fairy tale. In this version, the wicked stepmother is replaced by a stepfather, Don Magnifico. The Fairy Godmother is replaced by Alidoro, a philosopher and the Prince's tutor. Additionally, Cinderella is identified not by her glass slipper, but by her bracelet.
