Vesti la giubba” or “Put on the costume” is one of the best known tenor arias in the western canon. At the end of act one in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Canio (John Pickle) has discovered his wife’s infidelity, but must still don the festive garb of a clown because the show must go on. He must paint on a smile and delight the crowds, even while his heart is breaking.

Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci was performed at the Ellie Caulkins Opera house in 2020.
